There's a big part of me that thinks somewhere along the way we've lost sight of what really has value. Rocket science there, hey!
But seriously.. the one getting under my skin at the moment.. the 38 hour week. Workers are employed, for the most part, to work a certain amount of hours per week, and receive a wage for every hour worked. Regardless of efficiency, regardless of the deadline for the work.. we honour time over efficiency, and in that, remove people from their family and friend support network for longer periods than necessary.
It is this same system that honours age regardless of experience. A 17 year old with 2 years experience will generally perform better than an 18 year old just starting, yet gets the higher pay rate.
Surely it's time for a better system.
I don't know what shape that system need take, but it needs a reshape.
With the double income family now the norm and not the exception, the next generation may well depend on it.
Something's gotta give!
